DeepSeek Harness v0.2.1-alpha.2: Worktrees & Channel Trap
📑 Table of Contents
Introduction
Search DeepSeek Harness v0.2.1-alpha.2 and it is easy to treat it as a new stable version that default install will pull. It is not: GitHub tagged prerelease dsh-v0.2.1-alpha.2 on October 9, 2026; npm package @deepseek-ai/dsh channel alpha points there, but latest / next still sit on 0.2.0-rc.2.
Short take: a normal npm install / tracking latest will not land on alpha.2; to try experimental Git Worktrees, workdir tools, and reasoning translation, install alpha explicitly. This site is an independent community; versions follow GitHub Releases and npm dist-tags. Still asking what Harness is? Start with DeepSeek Harness getting started.

I. Check the channel first: alpha ≠ latest
| How you install | What you get | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Track npm latest / next | 0.2.0-rc.2 | Daily default; will not silently enter 0.2.1-alpha |
Explicitly install alpha or pin 0.2.1-alpha.2 | 0.2.1-alpha.2 | Only then do you get the experimental features in this article |
| Only read an old “npx quick start” post on this site | Depends on the tag resolved at that time | Before upgrading run npm view @deepseek-ai/dsh dist-tags |
Check command:
npm view @deepseek-ai/dsh dist-tags
You should see something like: latest / next → 0.2.0-rc.2, alpha → 0.2.1-alpha.2 (per your registry at query time). Models still go through DeepSeek API (common IDs: deepseek-flash, deepseek-v4-pro); bumping Harness ≠ swapping models. Peak/off-peak pricing: DeepSeek API.
II. What you can feel in alpha.2
Versus 0.2.0-rc.2, release notes items that matter day to day:
- Experimental Git Worktrees plugin (enable on the plugins page): the Agent can create and enter an independent Git checkout — good for parallel branches without messing up the main workspace.
working_directorytool + SDK APIs: sessions can read and switch the work directory; TypeScript / Python SDKs expose read/write interfaces.- Experimental reasoning machine-translation plugin: enable on the plugins page; providers include Bing, Google, or paid DeepSeek Flash (bills DeepSeek API balance, not free web quota).
- Global AGENTS.md: read shared agents-directory instructions; set the directory with env var
DSH_AGENTS_HOME. - Official plugin list: Claude Code, Codex bundles support on-demand install (versions aligned with the current release).
Also: experimental Session state recording APIs, when workflow steps collapse, SSH helper runtime, etc. — mainly for extension authors. Full list: official v0.2.1-alpha.2 Release.

III. Before upgrading: both mode is gone
Release notes remove tool display both hybrid mode, keeping only native and ptc. If custom config, scripts, or third-party plugins still use both, fix them after upgrade or tool presentation will not match expectations.
Related: Agent Team messages go straight to the target Inbox (standalone outbox / auto-retry fields need migration); default SDK profile shifts from a fixed coding Agent to a more general AI Agent identity. Custom SDK / plugins: read that Release Breaking / Chores sections, not just swap package names.
Backup tip: before upgrading back up ~/.dsh (or your actual DSH home), Profile, Session, and plugin config; the alpha channel can change anytime.
IV. alpha.1 V4.1 fit (do not skip)
v0.2.1-alpha.1 on October 3 tuned image scaling and token estimates for DeepSeek V4.1, raised default request image size and encode quality, and dropped retired old Flash / Vision Exp from the default model list. If you mainly want vision + Agent with deepseek-flash, alpha.1+ runtime fit beats “only change the model ID.” Image API: How to send images with DeepSeek API; thinking: DeepSeek thinking mode.
alpha.1 also added experimental Claude Code Mods compatibility (officially: validating Mods API is roughly a Harness plugin subset today — not a full compatibility promise), Web --public-url, and “let Agent create plugins.” Do not treat Mods as “install and 100% run Claude Code plugin marketplace.”
FAQ
Is alpha.2 a stable release?
No. The tag is Pre-release; npm did not push it to latest. Production defaults stay on 0.2.0-rc.2 unless you explicitly accept alpha risk.
How do Codex / Copilot / Claude Code compare?
Harness is DeepSeek’s own Agent runtime. OpenAI Codex: DeepSeek Codex setup; GitHub Copilot: DeepSeek GitHub Copilot setup; Claude Code: Claude Code DeepSeek. They can coexist; pick by client, not one config for everything.
Does reasoning translation with DeepSeek Flash cost extra?
Yes. Paid DeepSeek Flash counts DeepSeek API usage; Bing / Google follow those providers’ rules. Control cost by disabling the plugin or using non-paid providers only.
Summary
DeepSeek Harness v0.2.1-alpha.2 is not “another model” — it is match the channel, enable experimental plugins as needed, drop both. Run npm view on dist-tags first, then decide whether to pin alpha; turn on Worktrees / working_directory when you need parallel branches and workdir control. Overview: Harness guide.
